Alicante is the name of the province and also the provincial city. It is well worth a visit. The history can be traced back to Roman times when it was known as the city of light.

There is a castle perched high overlooking the city with wonderful views (a lift takes you there from the sandy beach).
The Santa Barbara Castle is located on the top of Benacantil Mountain, 166 metres above sea level.
In & dominating the city centre of Alicante
From there, you can see almost the entire bay of Alicante. On its slopes have been found archaeological remains of the Bronze Age, Iberian and Roman, but the origin of the fortress is in the late ninth century with the ‘Moors’ Muslim rule.

The seafront is very impressive with a superb yacht marina and pretty promenade with amazing paving that is a real optical illusion and it looks as if it is undulating. Restaurants and cafes line the promenade and flowers and palm trees add to the ambience. Most of the cafes and restaurants along the promenade offer inexpensive lunch menus.

Just behind the seafront lies the old town, with it’s beautiful buildings, including the town hall and a magnificent Gothic church. Here you will find tapas bars and cozy restaurants.

If shopping is your thing, then there is a modern area, with lots of big names and designer fashion as well as an indoor food market with incredible choice of goods on show in an iconic building.

There is also a lovely old building that houses the indoor Central Market (Mercado central): Opened in 1921 with an area of 11,100 m2. It has 292 Commercial Units. Full of fresh fruit, meats, bread and lovely cafes. On a Monday this is open until 2.30pm – Just behind this is a small but charming flower market.

The city has been well planned with boulevards full of flowers, statues and seats to rest, away from the busy traffic.

Both shopaholics and culture lovers will not be disappointed with this full day excursion, with plenty of luggage space in the coach for your shopping!
